I was speaking to a farmer today from the USA who said he used to farm using GMO’s for 12 years, in the beginning the results were fine but after a while his crop yields on vegetables he produced began to fall. Then his pig stock which he fed GMO grain, began to suffer and then die off early. His family also were experiencing health issues.
He looked into several possible causes of the falling crop yields and health issues and finally went back to conventional agriculture (non GMO). His vegetable yields began to improve and he stopped feeding his pigs GMO’s and the health of his pigs improved as well. The results were dramatic enough to convince him to stop planting and using GMO’s and return to conventional agriculture then begin the move toward organic agriculture.
He is delighted with the results he is now achieving and the comments he is getting from customers on the improved flavour of his produce. From a confirmed GMO farmer he is now a confirmed anti GMO campaigner.
Please God keep Australian food real.
I cannot take sugar - it makes me very ill, i will get migraine that
lasts for days from even a tiny amount of sugar. I would collapse,
become unconscious if i ate a dessert. So, i make it a practice to
always read labels on everything. At home I make all our own sauces,
dressings, chutneys, pastes and always buy fresh local and ever
possible, organic produce. Travel ing is a challenge. Food is not
always what it appears to be.
In the US, I found "creamer" for tea and coffee that had no dairy in
it all. It was made from soy and cottonseed oil plus chemicals. In
addition, soy in the USA is highly likely to be genetically modified.
So we eliminated "creamer" from our diet.
The "honey" was not actually honey, it was "honey flavored" spread.
I needed a quick breakfast before one flight last week and requested
egg on toast from a small food stall at an airport. I was served with
a perfectly square yellow, rubbery thing on a piece of sweet shiny
synthetic looking bread. I picked up the square yellow thing, wobbled
it in the air and asked John "is this supposed to be egg?" It looked
more like a frisbee.
Rye bread last week arrived on my plate white with a swirl of dark
brown through it. The swirl of dark brown was very sweet, it appeared
to be a molasses swirl through white bread. So we don't order "rye"
bread in America any more.
The manufacturers of Roundup Ready corn and other grain products are
now finding that mother nature is beginning to develop an immunity to
Roundup, so they now want to develop Agent Orange Ready grain
products. They want farmers to be able to drench their crops with
Agent Orange to kill off the weeds that may try to grow in a farmers
crop. Humans will then be fed the harvested grain from those crops.
I foolishly thought that governments had learnt how dangerous Agent
Orange was when soldiers who returned from Vietnam began producing
babies with birth defects!
We see what is called food for human consumption being mutilated by
greedy corporations whose only consideration is how to squeeze an
extra buck out of people.
We cannot trust the food "manufactured" by ruthless corporations and
then sold through equally greedy supermarkets. Large farms are
dictated to by the supermarkets and the farmers who supply them must
do what the supermarkets want in order to survive.
It is no wonder that people are turning in increasing numbers to small
boutique farmers at farm shops and farmers markets around the world.
It is no wonder that supermarkets feel threatened by farmers markets
and are trying to close them down , and in some countries succeeding.
We need small farmers now to provide us with "real" food. We need farm
shops and farmers markets to stay true to their values, to not become
seduced by monetary gain, so we can continue to trust and believe in
Please God save farm shops and farmers markets.
It is encouraging to see the growth around the western world of people
wanting to grow their own vegetables and raise chickens in their back
yards. We are returning to the core values of our parents and our
grand parents. We want to connect again with nature and the source of
our food. We have to. We can't trust our governments to protect us
from the corporations that now control our food chains. We can't
trust the information they send us, we now are returning to gleaning
information as our grandparents did from friends, from clubs, from our
own network. Is it any wonder people are turning to the Internet for
information on how to grow veg, how to build a chicken run, how to
please God save our food sources and please God save our planet from
destruction by greedy corporations and power hungry governments, so
that there is a planet still there for our grandchildrens
Genetically engineered maize: New indication of health risks - January 2012

Bt protein toxic to human cells Caen/
München. Insecticidal Bt toxins such as those produced in genetically
engineered plants can be detrimental to human cells. This is a result of
recent research led by researchers at the University of Caen (France).
Their experiments showed that toxins produced in, for example, the
genetically engineered maize MON810, can significantly impact the
viability of human cells. The effects were observed with relatively high
concentrations of the toxins, nevertheless there is cause for concern.
According to companies like Monsanto, which produces genetically
engineered maize with these toxins, the toxins are supposed to be active
only against particular insects and should have no effect on mammals
and humans at all. For the first time, experiments have now shown that
they can have an effect on human cells. These kinds of investigations
are not a requirement for risk assessment in Europe or in any other
finding of the researchers concerns a herbicide formulation sold under
the brand name Roundup. Massive amounts of this herbicide are sprayed on
genetically engineered soybean crops and its residues can be found in
food and feed. According to the new publication, even extremely low
dosages of Roundup (glyphosate formulations) can damage human cells.
These findings are in accordance with several other investigations
highlighting unexpected health risks associated with glyphosate
Wikipedia define Genetically modified (GM) foods as food products that have had their DNA directly altered through genetic engineering .
The most common modified foods are derived from soybean , corn , canola , and cotton seed oil .
Many major controversies surround genetically engineered crops and commonly focus on the health and safety effects on human children, long-term health effects for anyone eating them, environmental safety, labelling and consumer choice , intellectual property rights, ethics , food security , poverty reduction , environmental conservation , and potential disruption or even possible destruction of the food chain.
GM Crops were originally hailed as a saviour to the world's food crisis, however, the result has been a threat to global biodiversity as giant multinational companies strive to monpolise the world's seed stocks.
Here is a summary of the benefits and the problems of GM crops.
* Increased nutrients, yields, and stress tolerance
* Improved resistance to disease, pests, and herbicides
* Potential human health impacts, including allergens, transfer of antibiotic resistance markers, unknown effects
* Potential environmental impacts, including: unintended transfer of transgenes through cross-pollination, unknown effects on other organisms (e.g., soil microbes), and loss of flora and fauna biodiversity
* Access and Intellectual Property
* Domination of world food production by a few companies
* Increasing dependence on industrialized nations by developing countries
* Biopiracy, or foreign exploitation of natural resources
* Tampering with nature by mixing genes among species
* Objections to consuming animal genes in plants and vice versa
* Not mandatory in some countries (e.g., United States)
* Mixing GM crops with non-GM products confounds labeling attempts
* New advances may be skewed to interests of rich countries
1. Farmers who have saved their seed for generations, once they buy into GM seed, are not permitted to save their seed as the seed copyright is owned by multi-national corporations. This is bankrupting small subsistence farmers in third world countries. Do a search for Percy Schmeiser to read what happened to one small farmer in Canada.
2. GM seed has the potential to contaminate other non-GM crops and insect repellant GM crops are destroying beneficial insects as well as the target insects. Read http://www.greenpeace .org.uk/blog/gm/counting-the-cost-of-gm-contamination-20071109 for more information.
3. As the multi national companies that own the GM seed have fought to prevent labelling of GM food, the only way that we consumers can be sure we are not eating GM food, is to eat only organic foods.
I am currently putting petitions around the Shire of Kalamunda to garner support for a move to be made to council to have GM Foods banned from being supplied to facilities administered by the Shire. I believe there is insufficient research on the long term impacts on our health and the environment for GM crops to be permitted in our state.
I also believe that people who are unable to make a choice for themselves on whether or not they would choose to ingest GM products, namely our elderly at aged care facilities and our children at child care facilities, be protected from potential harm to their health.
I came across this excellent article from the Union of Concerned Scientists that spells out the risks of GM food. The reference to their website is at the bottom of the article.
If you live in the Perth Hills within the Shire of Kalamunda and would like to support this move and sign a petition, you can download a petition here .
